Schedule and Content

This course will be given as a self-study course with tutoring and two seminars. Tutorial sessions will be scheduled together with the participants (but see rough schedule below). The course is equivalent to the regularly scheduled course described here.

For 5 credits, the course will cover the following topics in syntactic parsing:

Students who want 7.5 credits will in addition have to do a project worth 2.5 credits.

Intended Learning Outcomes

In order to pass the course, a student must be able to with a certain degree of independent creativity, clearly stating and critically discussing methodological assumptions, applying state-of-the-art methods for evaluation, and presenting the result in a professionally adequate manner.

Examination and Grading Criteria

For 5 credits, the course is examined by means of four assignments:
  1. PCFG parsing: Implement the CKY parsing algorithm and evaluate the parser using treebank data. Assignment
  2. Dependency parsing: Implement a transition-based parsing algorithm and evaluate the parser using treebank data. Assignment
  3. Literature seminar: Actively participate in two literature seminars.
  4. Literature review: Summarize, analyze and critically review two scientific articles on syntactic parsing in a written report of 3-5 pages.

For 7.5 credits, students must in addition do a project chosen together with the teacher.

In order to pass the course, a student must pass all assignments (and do the project for extra credits). In order to pass the course with distinction (Väl godkänt), a student must pass at least two assignments (or one assignment and the project) with distinction.
